Rückkehr der Titanen: Wenn die Legende plötzlich wieder bissig wird
Es gibt Bands, mit denen man alt wird, und Bands, die das Fundament unseres musikalischen Lebens überhaupt erst gegossen haben. Europe gehören zweifellos zu letzterer Kategorie. Die schwedischen Urväter des melodischen Hard Rock sind für viele von uns mehr als nur eine Band, sie sind die Soundtrack-Begleitung unserer Jugend, unseres ersten Autos, unserer ersten Bandversuche und unzähliger unvergesslicher Nächte. Wenn Namen wie „The Final Countdown“, „Rock the Night“ oder die Über-Ballade „Carrie“ fallen, bewegen wir uns im allerheiligsten Kreis des Rock- und Metal-Olymp. Das sind Hymnen für die Ewigkeit, Meilensteine, die Generationen geprägt haben.
Doch wie das oft so ist mit den Helden vergangener Tage: Man schaut ehrfurchtbar gerne zurück, aber live oder auf neuen Platten hat man schon so mancher Legende müde Gesichter oder Dienst nach Vorschrift attestiert. Geht es um Konzerte, so mancher von uns hat das selbst erlebt, wie damals, vor einigen Jahren, als Europe zusammen mit Def Leppard in der Zitadelle in Spandau auf der Bühne standen. Damals war das ein netter Abend, ein bisschen Nostalgie, aber der Funke wollte nicht so recht überspringen; es haute einen schlichtweg nicht mehr gänzlich vom Hocker. Man dachte sich: „Gute Jungs, legendärer Katalog, aber der ganz große Biss von einst ist Geschichte.“
Und genau hier kommt der 25. September 2026 ins Spiel.
Mit ihrem brandneuen Studioalbum „Come This Madness“ schlagen Europe gerade alle Skeptiker (mich eingeschlossen) mehr als nur k.o. Statt sich auf alten Lorbeeren auszuruhen, knallt dieses Album vom ersten Takt an so brachial, frisch und unbändig aus den Boxen, dass man unweigerlich innehalten muss. Die Schweden klingen hungrig, riffgewaltig und absolut relevant. Dieses Werk fackelt nicht lange, es fordert Aufmerksamkeit und zeigt, dass die Band noch lange nicht zum alten Eisen gehört. Ganz ehrlich? Nach diesem Brett bin ich der Erste, der sagt: Diese Band kriegt von mir eine zweite Chance live, und zwar mit absoluter Vorfreude!
Hier nun meine Track für Track Analyse:
1. One on One
Der Einstieg in das Album gelingt der Band mit diesem Opener absolut kompromisslos. Statt wie erwartet mit einer klassischen, dicken Gitarrenwand loszulegen, überrascht der Song mit einer markanten, tiefen und verzerrten Basslinie, die sofort für gespannte Aufmerksamkeit sorgt. Sobald Joey Tempest mit seiner gewohnten Energie einsetzt, entfaltet sich ein treibender, extrem eingängiger Hard-Rock-Kracher, der den perfekten und kraftvollen Ton für die gesamte Platte vorgibt.
2. The Cult of Ignorance
Direkt im Anschluss vertieft dieser Song den gesellschaftskritischen Ton des Albums. Tempest rechnet hier lyrisch mit Machtgier und Tech-Giganten ab, während musikalisch vor allem ein geschmackvolles Gitarrensolo und eine reifere, abgeklärtere Gesangsleistung im Vordergrund stehen, die ganz bewusst auf die extremen Höhen der Jugend verzichtet und dadurch umso kraftvoller wirkt.
3. Come This Madness
Das schwere und elegante Titelstück, das der Platte ihren Namen gibt, fungiert als Paradebeispiel für die moderne, kontrollierte Ausrichtung der Band. Hier wird exakt dosiert, wann die Instrumente massiven Druck erzeugen und wann man den Melodien Raum zum Atem gibt, wobei fließende Keyboards dem Sound die perfekte atmosphärische Dichte verleihen.
4. This Time of Year
Mit diesem Titel schlägt die Band gekonnt den Bogen zu einer kraftvollen, ergreifenden Ballade, die sich tief unter die Haut gräbt. Der Song lebt von einer melancholischen Grundstimmung und einer intensiven emotionalen Dichte, die durch eine transparente Produktion perfekt getragen wird. Statt reiner Kitsch-Akkorde entfaltet sich hier ein gewaltiger, hymnischer Spannungsbogen, bei dem ein feinfühliges, aber druckvolles Schlagzeugspiel im Refrain eine Wucht entwickelt, die den Hörer komplett mitreißt.
5. In a Different World
Den ersten Block schließt dieser melodische und nachdenkliche Höhepunkt ab. Der Song zeigt die Band von ihrer tiefgründigen Seite und beweist, dass hier eine in sich gefestigte Einheit am Werk ist, die niemandem mehr etwas beweisen muss, sondern schlicht erstklassigen, ehrlichen Classic-Rock zelebriert.
6. Scandinavian Eyes
In der zweiten Hälfte zieht das Album die Zügel noch einmal an, angeführt von diesem kraftvollen Stück, das mit seiner nordischen Melancholie und treibenden Rhythmen sofort ins Ohr geht. Der Track besitzt eine mitreißende Dynamik und sticht als einer der potenziellen Live-Lieblinge der Platte hervor.
7. Takin' It Back
Mit diesem Song zieht die Band die Zügel ordentlich an. Die Nummer kommt mit einer echten Portion klassischer Hard-Rock-Energie daher, treibenden Rhythmen und einem Refrain, der sofort zündet und live für ordentlich Bewegung sorgen dürfte.
8. In the Absence of Grace
Dieser Song hat sich klammheimlich zu einem meiner absoluten Favoriten des Albums entwickelt. Es ist ein reines Klavierstück, das komplett ohne Strom und Zerre auskommt und stattdessen mit purer, melancholischer Schönheit glänzt. Die schlichte Emotion und die enorme Kraft, die allein durch den Gesang in diesem gerade einmal 1 Minute und 29 Sekunden kurzen Song transportiert werden, machen ihn zu einem absoluten, Gänsehaut erzeugenden Highlight der gesamten Platte.
9. The Angels Must Have Flown
Hier wird gar nicht erst lange gefackelt, dieser Song ist von der ersten Sekunde an ein echtes Brett, das sofort nach vorne losprescht. Statt ruhiger Aufbau-Strophen drückt die Band hier ordentlich aufs Gas, bevor der Track in einen unfassbar starken, super melodischen Refrain übergeht, der sich sofort im Ohr festsetzt und mit seiner mitreißenden Energie absolut begeistert.
10. The Devil's Back
Dieser Track bringt noch einmal einen wuchtigen, rockigen Rhythmus zurück. Mit markanten Riffs und einer treibenden Dynamik erinnert er an die stärksten härteren Momente der Bandgeschichte, wirkt durch den modernen Mix aber absolut frisch.
11. Nothing Can Follow This
Den famosen Schlusspunkt setzt schließlich der von Kritikern gefeierte Rausschmeißer. Er entlässt den Hörer mit einer epischen Wucht, einem großen melodischen Bogen und einem erhabenen Gefühl, daß den perfekten Schlusspunkt unter diese starke Platte setzt.
Fazit: Die Auferstehung der Titanen
Was für eine Reise! Wenn man bedenkt, mit welchen leisen Zweifeln man mancher Altherren-Reunion begegnet, ist „Come This Madness“ das absolute Antidot zu jeglicher Nostalgie-Müdigkeit. Europe haben hier nicht einfach nur ein neues Album eingespielt, sie haben sich musikalisch neu erfunden, ohne auch nur ein einziges Gramm ihrer historischen Identität zu opfern. Die Platte verbindet die Weisheit und Reife von Jahrzehnten im Business mit dem bissigen Hunger einer jungen, hungrigen Truppe, die noch einmal allen zeigen will, wie moderner Classic Rock zu klingen hat.
Von der rohen Eröffnung bis zum epischen Rausschmeißer gibt es hier keinen einzigen Ausfall, dafür aber jede Menge Tiefgang, Härte, Gänsehautmomente wie das Klavier-Juwel und astreine Rock-Hymnen. Dieses Album räumt alle Zweifel restlos aus dem Weg und beweist, dass die ganz großen Legenden eben doch niemals rosten. Nach diesem absoluten Meisterwerk blicke ich nicht mehr nur wehmütig auf alte Zeiten zurück, sondern freue mich mit absoluter Vorfreude darauf, diese Band endlich wieder mit ganz anderem Biss live zu erleben.
Das ist kein Pflichtprogramm, das ist pure Begeisterung. Daher gibt es für dieses Brett von mir ganz ungespitzt und aus tiefster Überzeugung: 10 von 10 Pommesgabeln!

Return of the Titans: When a Legend Suddenly Gets Its Bite Back
There are bands you grow old with, and bands that laid the very foundation of our musical lives. Europe undoubtedly belong to the latter category. The Swedish pioneers of melodic hard rock are much more than just a band to many of us—they are the soundtrack accompaniment of our youth, our first car, our first band rehearsals, and countless unforgettable nights. When names like "The Final Countdown", "Rock the Night", or the ultimate ballad "Carrie" are dropped, we are moving within the holiest circle of the rock and metal Olympus. These are anthems for eternity, milestones that have shaped generations.
Yet, as is often the case with the heroes of days gone by: we love looking back with reverence, but live or on new records, more than a few legends have been guilty of tired faces or phoning it in. When it comes to concerts, many of us have experienced it ourselves—like back then, a few years ago, when Europe stood on stage together with Def Leppard at the Zitadelle in Spandau. Back then, it was a nice evening, a bit of nostalgia, but the spark just wouldn't quite catch; it simply didn't blow you away completely anymore. You thought to yourself: "Good guys, legendary catalog, but that very big bite of yesteryear is history."
And that is precisely where September 25, 2026, comes into play.
With their brand-new studio album "Come This Madness", Europe are knocking all skeptics (myself included) more than just out cold. Instead of resting on old laurels, this album bursts out of the speakers from the very first beat with such brute force, freshness, and unbridled energy that you can't help but stop and listen. The Swedes sound hungry, riff-heavy, and completely relevant. This work doesn't waste any time; it demands attention and shows that the band is far from being over the hill. Honestly? After this masterpiece, I am the first to say: this band is getting a second chance live from me, and with absolute anticipation!
Here is my track-by-track analysis:
1. One on One The band pulls off the entry into this album absolutely uncompromisingly as an opener. Instead of starting with a classic, thick wall of guitars as expected, the song surprises with a prominent, deep, and distorted bass line that immediately demands intense attention. As soon as Joey Tempest kicks in with his familiar energy, a driving, extremely catchy hard rock banger unfolds that sets the perfect and powerful tone for the entire record.
2. The Cult of Ignorance Directly following this, the song deepens the sociocritical tone of the album. Tempest lyrically settles accounts with greed for power and tech giants, while musically, a tasteful guitar solo and a more mature, composed vocal performance take center stage, consciously dispensing with the extreme highs of youth and thereby acting all the more powerful.
3. Come This Madness The heavy and elegant title track that gives the record its name serves as a prime example of the band's modern, controlled direction. Here, it is precisely dosed when the instruments generate massive pressure and when the melodies are given room to breathe, with flowing keyboards lending the sound the perfect atmospheric density.
4. This Time of Year With this title, the band skillfully builds a bridge to a powerful, poignant ballad that digs deep under the skin. The song lives from a melancholic baseline mood and an intense emotional depth, perfectly carried by a transparent production. Instead of pure kitsch chords, a massive, anthemic tension arc unfolds here, in which a sensitive yet punchy drum performance in the chorus develops a force that completely sweeps the listener along.
5. In a Different World This melodic and thoughtful high point closes the first block. The song shows the band from their profound side and proves that a self-contained unit is at work here which no longer has to prove anything to anyone, but simply celebrates top-notch, honest classic rock.
6. Scandinavian Eyes In the second half, the album tightens the reins once again, led by this powerful piece that goes straight into the ear with its nordic melancholy and driving rhythms. The track possesses a captivating dynamic and stands out as one of the potential live favorites of the record.
7. Takin' It Back With this song, the band really tightens the reins. The track comes along with a genuine portion of classic hard rock energy, driving rhythms, and a chorus that ignites immediately and should cause quite a bit of movement live.
8. In the Absence of Grace This song has sneakily developed into one of my absolute favorites on the album. It is a pure piano piece that gets along completely without electricity and distortion, shining instead with pure, melancholic beauty. The simple emotion and the enormous power transported solely through the vocals in this track, which is a mere 1 minute and 29 seconds short, make it an absolute, goosebump-inducing highlight of the entire record.
9. The Angels Must Have Flown There is no beating around the bush here—this song is a genuine powerhouse from the very first second, pressing forward immediately. Instead of quiet building verses, the band really steps on the gas here before the track transitions into an insanely strong, super melodic chorus that instantly sticks in your ear and absolutely thrills with its infectious energy.
10. The Devil's Back This track brings back a weighty, rocking rhythm once more. With striking riffs and a driving dynamic, it recalls the strongest heavier moments of the band's history while feeling entirely fresh thanks to the modern mix.
11. Nothing Can Follow This Finally, the critically acclaimed closer sets the celebrated final point. It releases the listener with an epic force, a grand melodic arc, and a sublime feeling that puts the perfect finishing touch on this strong record.---------------------------------
Fazit: The Resurrection of the Titans
What a journey! Considering the quiet doubts one brings to certain old-men reunions, "Come This Madness" is the absolute antidote to any nostalgia fatigue. Europe didn't just record a new album here; they reinvented themselves musically without sacrificing a single gram of their historical identity. The record combines the wisdom and maturity of decades in the business with the fierce hunger of a young, eager crew wanting to show everyone once more how modern classic rock is supposed to sound.
From the raw opening to the epic closer, there isn't a single dud here, but instead plenty of depth, heaviness, goosebump moments like the piano gem, and top-tier rock anthems. This album clears away all doubts completely and proves that the true giants truly never rust. After this absolute masterpiece, I no longer look back at old times with mere wistfulness, but look forward with absolute anticipation to finally experiencing this band live again with a completely different bite.
This isn't a mandatory chore; this is pure enthusiasm. Therefore, for this absolute banger, I give it straight and out of deepest conviction: 10 out of 10 Metal Horns!
