Traditionsreiche Metalbands aus Deutschland gibt es zahlreiche. Zu den außerhalb des Rampenlichts stehenden gehört die 1981 in Münster gegründete Melodic-Metal-Band Mad Max um Gründer Jürgen Breforth. Dass es diese Band nicht geschafft hat, sich neben den ganz Großen zu etablieren, hatte viele Gründe. Zu nennen wäre vor allem der geplatzte Plattendeal mit RCA in den 80ern und der anschließende Abgang einiger Bandmitglieder. Aber gut, im Gegensatz zu anderen gesignten Bands aus der Ära gibt es Mad Max ja noch!
45 Jahre gibt es sie also bereits – Grund genug, zum Jubiläum ein Album zu releasen und frühere Mitglieder zusammenzutrommeln. Bereits letztes Jahr kamen Re-Releases von „In Concert“ sowie „Heavy Metal“ auf den Markt. Das brandneue Album trägt den Titel „Stories Of Destiny“ und ist gefüllt mit Liedern, die Jürgen Breforth mit bekannten Namen der Metalszene geschrieben hat und die im „originalen“ Mad-Max-Sound neu interpretiert wurden. Das 11 Titel umfassende Werk bietet Melodic-Metal-Songs, die klassisch, aber keineswegs veraltet klingen. Mit „Piece of Candy“ hat sich ein Lied einen Platz auf der Tracklist ergattert, wofür Andreas Baesler, ein weiteres Gründungsmitglied, die Vocals zusammen mit dem aktuellen Leadsänger Alan Clark beisteuert. Die Band nimmt den Hörer auf eine temporeiche Reise mit, die durch „Wings of Freedom“ einen kurzen Bruch ins Romantische erfährt, zum Ende dank „Dulces Fasos“ aber wieder mächtig Fahrt für ein Finale Furioso aufnimmt.
Man hört den Leadsängern nicht an, dass sie über 60 Jahre alt sind, die Kopfstimmen sitzen nach wie vor.
Für ein 45-jähriges Jubiläum fallen die 11 Titel zwar ein wenig kurz aus und eine Doppel-CD hätte die Bandgeschichte vielleicht noch besser widergespiegelt. Aber womöglich will die Band gar nicht alt wirken, denn genug Saft hat sie definitiv. Und das bitte für mindestens fünf weitere Jahre – bis zum runden 50. Jubiläum. Wir freuen uns darauf!

There are quite a few traditional german metal bands. Operating outside the main spotlight is the melodic metal band Mad Max, founded in Münster in 1981 by Jürgen Breforth.The fact that this band didn't manage to establish itself alongside the big ones was due to many reasons, most notably the collapsed record deal with RCA in the 80s and the subsequent departure of several band members. But well, unlike other signed bands from that era, Mad Max is still around!
They have been around for 45 years, reason well enough to release an album for the anniversary and rally former members. Just last year, a few re-releases hit the market, such as "In Concert"(1981) and "Heavy Metal"(1982). The brand-new album is titled "Stories Of Destiny" and is filled with songs that Jürgen Breforth wrote alongside well-known names from the metal scene and are reinterpreted in the "original" Mad Max sound. The 11-track record delivers melodic metal songs that sound classic, but by no means outdated. With "Piece of Candy", one song secured its spot on the tracklist, with founding member Andreas Baesler contributing vocals along with the current lead-vocalist Alan Clark. The band takes the listener on a fast-paced journey that experiences a brief romantic detour with "Wings of Freedom", but picks up serious momentum toward the end thanks to "Dulces Fasos" for a finale furioso.
You can't tell from listening that the lead singers are well over 60 years old, the falsettos are still spot on. For a 45th anniversary though, 11 tracks do feel a bit short, and a double CD might have reflected the band's history even better. But then again, maybe the band doesn't want to appear old, because they definitely still have plenty of fuel in the tank. And let's keep that going for at least another five years, please, until the big 50th anniversary. We're looking forward to it!
