Das nenne ich mal Durchhaltevermögen, oder schon beinah eisernen Willen. Bereits im Jahr 1986 gründeten Chris Lykins, James Gulotta, and Brian Zimmerman, denen kurze Zeit später, Tim Kelly and Rick Skowron, die Trash-Metal Band Atrophy. In selber Besetzung veröffentlichte die Formation, ganz im Style ihrer Kollegen und Vorbilder, Testament, Vio-lence, Forbidden, Sacred Reich and Nuclear Assault, das Debüt, Socialized Hate (1988), dem dann im Jahr 1990 bereits das zweite Album mit Namen, Violent by Nature, folgte. Obwohl ihr Sound, die Geschwindigkeit sowie die textlichen Inhalte wie die berühmte Faust aufs Auge passte und es auch durchaus eine eigene Fangemeinde gab, zerbrach die Band im Jahre 1993.
Zimmerman, Gulotta and Kelly formten die Band im Jahr 2015 zusammen mit, Casper Garret und Rich Olsen, der letztendlich dann aber doch durch, Bobby Stein, ersetzt wurde neu. Leider veröffentlichte man unter dieser Besetzung kein weiteres Album.
So floss die Zeit erneut ins Land, bis heute ins Jahr 2024. Mittlerweile hat es lediglich Brian Zimmermann geschafft als letztes noch exzitierendes Gründungsmitglied, gefolgt von den neuen Mitstreitern, Nathan Montalvo - Lead-Gitarre, Mark Coglan - Rhythmus-Gitarre, Josh Gibbs – Bass und Jonas Shütz – Drums, Atrophy ein drittes Mal wiederzuerwecken. Und diesmal gleich mit dem lange überfälligen dritten Studiowerk.
Was sich in der Band selbst änderte, gilt aber auch 2024 nicht für ihren geradlienigen und äußerst direkten Trash-Metal. Selbiger wird dem gewillten Hörer nämlich mit einer gewaltigen Portion an Selbstvertrauen auf neun niegelnagelneuen Songs um die Ohren gehauen. Unsere Herren und Damen der Musikerpresse bezeichnen das aktuelle Album als, befriedigenden, akustischen, Tritt in die Fresse. Anders kann man das Werk nicht bezeichnen/beschreiben. Herrlich klassischer Trash-Metal, der sich hinter keiner der großen Bands verstecken braucht, erwartet den Fan und gewillten Hörer. Auch Inhaltlich gab es keine Veränderungen und so befasst sich das neue Werk ausschließlich mit den gesellschaftlichen Missständen, vom Aufstand bis hin zur Gehirnwäsche durch die großen Nachrichtensender und den offensichtlichen Folgen für die Menschen, die einfach nur um ihr Leben kämpfen. Somit ist dieses Werk gleichermaßen ein Neuanfang als auch nicht besser passend in unserer Jetztzeit angesiedelt, wo es besser nicht passen könnte. Großartiges Werk von einer hoffnungsvollen Band, die nun hoffentlich die längst überfällige Anerkennung in der Szene erhält und somit am Leben bleibt.

That's what I call perseverance, or almost an iron will. Back in 1986, Chris Lykins, James Gulotta, and Brian Zimmerman, followed shortly afterwards by Tim Kelly and Rick Skowron, founded the trash metal band Atrophy. With the same line-up, the band released their debut, Socialized Hate (1988), in the style of their colleagues and role models Testament, Vio-lence, Forbidden, Sacred Reich and Nuclear Assault, which was followed by their second album, Violent by Nature, in 1990. Although their sound, speed and lyrical content fit like a glove and they had their own fan base, the band broke up in 1993.
Zimmerman, Gulotta and Kelly re-formed the band in 2015 with Casper Garret and Rich Olsen, who was eventually replaced by Bobby Stein. Unfortunately, no further album was released under this line-up.
So time flowed on again, until today in 2024. In the meantime, only Brian Zimmermann has managed to reawaken Atrophy for a third time as the last remaining founding member, followed by the new members Nathan Montalvo - lead guitar, Mark Coglan - rhythm guitar, Josh Gibbs - bass and Jonas Shütz - drums. And this time with the long overdue third studio album.
What has changed in the band itself, however, does not apply to their straightforward and extremely direct trash metal in 2024. This is delivered to the willing listener with a huge dose of self-confidence on nine brand new songs. Our gentlemen and ladies of the music press describe the current album as a satisfying, acoustic kick in the face. There is no other way to describe the work. Wonderfully classic trash metal, which doesn't need to hide behind any of the big bands, awaits the fan and willing listener. There have been no changes in terms of content either, and so the new album deals exclusively with social grievances, from the uprising to brainwashing by the major news channels and the obvious consequences for people who are simply fighting for their lives. As such, this work is both a new beginning as well as being set in the present day, where it couldn't be more fitting. Great work from a hopeful band that will hopefully now receive the long overdue recognition in the scene and thus stay alive.
